In February 2011, ASKW entered a design-assist project with the Bering Strait School district and architectural firm ECI Hyer to remodel portions of a19,000 square-foot K-12 school facility on the island of Little Diomede.

This remote project represents one of ASKW’s greatest logistical challenges to date. Ensuring successful delivery of equipment and materials during the first barge delivery was both difficult and critical to project success. The site is situated on a rugged coastline without a sea port, barge landing or airport runway. ASKW took on the responsibility of supplying sufficient fresh water, meals and sanitary facilities to crews, students and staff during construction. The project requires working a phased schedule and working during and between school sessions. Limited operating room is offered in the village because it is built on a mountain side that cuts steeply into Bering Strait waters. To facilitate, ASKW built temporary facilities within the school to accommodate construction crews while providing sufficient space for classes to resume.

Project complexity heightened with winter storms in 2011 and challenged crews and subcontractors with 90 mph winds and 15-foot seas that battered the coastline. It was the worst storm in the area in almost 40 years. Despite some material losses, the Diomede School Remodel continues into 2012 on schedule with no injuries or time lost to date.

ASKW has successfully been able to work through each of these challenges to provide the school repair and improvements no one previously thought possible. Though the work to be performed has been inherently difficult, it has progressed with impressive success. Initial phases involved lifting the Elementary School/Mechanical Building to create sufficient clearance to replace the crumbling post and pad foundation. With this critical phase completed successfully, ASKW can approach final phases with great confidence. Additional work scopes include construction management and value engineering, constructability review, scheduling and logistics coordination for the replacement of foundation systems and remodeling of an existing 6,662 square foot elementary school section and portions of a 9,268 square foot high school. Additional upgrades include refurbishing and reassigning an additional 1,000 square feet of space for miscellaneous uses, and reconstruction/refurbishment of decks, boardwalks, siding, roofing, footings, doors and windows.

Working together, ASKW and the BSSD have realized the potential that this large projects has brought the remote community. Together, the team has been able to bring other much-needed services and upgrades to the village. As a result, ASKW has provided both Owner and community the greatest value possible.
