The Emmonak School required a full renovation of the 17,500-square-foot elementary and middle school and construction of a new, 26,700-square-foot attached high school. ASRC SKW Eskimos (ASKW) provided construction services for the project, which resulted in a facility with improved user friendliness and ease of maintenance that serves as a well-designed meeting place for the remote community at the mouth of the Yukon River in Western Alaska.

Coordination with the design team, as well as seeking the input of the community residents and the Lower Yukon School District, ensured user needs were met with practical design solutions and facilitated completion of the phased work to reduce impact to users. Early procurement of long-lead items and careful coordination with suppliers and vendors were key to completing the elementary school in time for fall classes.

A 009A 005Despite many challenging site conditions, such as the Yukon River flooding the community and the remoteness of the location, the work was completed on schedule and within budget. ASKW managed and coordinated all work from start to finish, including procurement and placement of all gravel fill and performing site work such as final grading and utility connections.

The new high school was built on helical piling, a specialized pile type common in remote Alaska with poor soils. In addition to the school renovation and construction, other significant project features included demolition of bulk fuel storage tanks, the existing high school, and various outbuildings; installation of a fire-suppression system, wind generator, solar panels and an emergency module for power generation; and construction of a state-of-the-art gymnasium, play deck, exterior basketball court, kitchen, and detached garage.
