ASKW partnered with the Bering Strait School district and architectural firm ECI Hyer on a design-assist renovation project to restore the 19,000 square-foot K-12 public school facility on the remote island of Little Diomede. Our team provided construction and preconstruction management services, design and constructability reviews, value engineering, estimating, and project controls for cost, schedule and quality.
Little Diomede is located in the Bering Strait. It is extremely isolated and working there presented challenges in logistics and mobilization. We worked with suppliers, carriers and subcontractors to orchestrate delivery of materials and labor resources safely to and from a site, without a barge landing and airstrip. The project was complicated by rugged terrain, harsh weather conditions and a facility occupied throughout the school season. Our crews self-performed a majority of the work while using locally-hired labor crews without any lost-time incidents.
The school serves all grades K-12. It contains a 6,662 square-foot elementary school and a 9,268 square-foot high school on a post and pad foundation. The first construction phase involved lifting the Elementary School/Mechanical Building to create sufficient clearance to replace the crumbling seaside foundation. The remaining sequences included remodeling the elementary school, the gymnasium and portions of the high school, refurbishing and reassigning an additional 1,000 square feet of space for miscellaneous uses, and reconstructing all exterior decks, boardwalks, siding, roofing, footings, doors and windows.
As a part of the design process, our project managers offered insights and experience that accelerated the preconstruction phase, reduced potential for change orders and re-work. With extra efforts in working with the stakeholders and needs of the community, we built a reliable solution for our client within budget, and a usable school facility to withstand the extreme environmental conditions present on Little Diomede Island.
