Through demolition, rebuilding and new construction, ASRC SKW Eskimos (ASKW) delivered a 21,223-square-foot school — triple the size of the former Tanalian K-12 School in Port Alsworth. The project maintains ASKW’s reputation for completing quality remote-site construction on a tight budget.
Recognizing the need for space to house classrooms and other school functions during project completion, ASKW identified an appropriate temporary facility. The relocation played a key role in enabling early completion of the project. Value engineering by ASKW also provided several benefits: cost savings through a different approach to civil site work, enhancements for the gym and other components and a redesign of the mechanical and electrical systems that permitted inclusion of the loads for the new teacher housing.
The most challenging aspect of completing the Port Alsworth project was timely mobilization of freight and equipment to a community that has no water or land link to a commercial center. Through a carefully coordinated and executed consolidated shipment that provided 60% of the needed items, ASKW successfully orchestrated various legs of water and truck transport: barging from Seattle to Anchorage, trucking to the Homer area, barging across Cook Inlet, trucking over Lake Iliamna Pass to Lake Clark, and finally barging to Port Alsworth. The remaining 40% of freight arrived by air.
Today, the facility is an architecturally appealing school compliant with current codes that the community has proudly embraced. The newly constructed gymnasium offers state-of-the-art amenities in a space that is twice the size of the former gym. The school will accommodate a growing student body with improved life safety features, updated mechanical and electrical systems, accessibility and overall efficiency.
